No doubt you’ve heard about the new Ultimo campaign. They’re ditching their usual models like Peaches Geldof in favour of a cross section of real women that represent Britain.


Except they don’t do they, because they’re all white.
I’d like to say I’m surprised, but open any magazine and it’s always the same. Still for such a colossal campaign, it’s a massive fuck-up.

Gawd - this is pretty bad. It really pisses me off how pretty much every national women's glossy completely alienate non-Caucasian women. Beauty tips? What beauty tips? With Ultimo though - I don't know what's worse. Completely ignoring that women of colour exist, or doing what every other beauty company seems to do which is to have a token black girl, someone with olive skin (but is essentially white) and that's about it.
ReplyDeleteIt's totally bad. I was looking through some US mags and it struck me how far behind we are. They feature darker skinned women all the time in mainstream ad campaigns. I doubt it will ever change though to be honest.
